Our Story

Expanding Horizons is a transformative fitness mentorship program specifically designed for juvenile offenders under the direction of the court system. This program leverages the structure, discipline, and community building aspects of CrossFit to inspire positive change, foster accountability, and reduce recidivism among participants. Operated by Craving More LLC, and in partnership Expanding More Horizons NFP, the Expanding Horizons program partners with local CrossFit affiliates & with government run correctional facilities to deliver an impactful experience that builds resilience, confidence, and a sense of purpose in each participant.

Our program founders Matt Shindeldecker, Debbie Wagner, and Dr. Aaron Kuhn were inspired to bring together the benefits of CrossFit training and mental help support in order to improve the lives of others. Expanding Horizons was the culmination of their dream to work with a population of teens on probation or incarcerated, bringing them the mental and physical benefits of exercise in a supportive community of coaches who want to model resiliency and hard work. More than just an exercise program, Expanding Horizons brings hope and the fulfillment of setting and reaching goals inside and outside of the gym.

A recent program graduate was quoted saying, “It helped me mentally because it gave me a chance to sit down and think about what I am able to do, what different kind[s] of impacts and changes I am able to make in which I never thought I could and I’m thankful to have gotten the opportunity. It helped me physically because now I’m eating healthy, sleeping ten times better than I was, and my body feels great like I can compete more than I thought. I’m definitely getting stronger and more prepared for the military!”
